Overview
What Remains begins where Refusal to Remain Visible starts to open into another question:
Can a body leave an image without leaving a story behind? And if a story remains, whose story is it?
The investigation shifts attention from the act of leaving towards what remains after departure, traces, images, descriptions, memories, records, and narratives that can continue to make an absent body visible.
It asks what happens when the person who left is no longer able to control the story that follows. How does an absence become recorded, interpreted, named, or rewritten? What is the difference between the person who left and the version of her that remains in the archive?
Returning to Eve, the research also asks whether the story of “the Fall” might be understood not simply as the story of her departure, but as a narrative constructed around it.
The next stage of the research will begin moving towards archives of absence, including historical records surrounding women who left their homes or marriages, and particularly records of runaway wives.
